Decatur family papers, 1809-1896 (bulk 1811-1850), mostly relating to John Pine Decatur, the brother of Commodore Stephen Decatur; John Pine Decatur's wife, Maria Susanna Ten Eyck; and some of their children, John Pine Decatur, Stephen Decatur, Andrew Jackson Decatur, and Maria Susanna Decatur. There is also a letter from Thomas Sumpter to Commodore Stephen Decatur, discussing the disappearance of his nephew, Stephen Decatur McKnight, while on his way home from Rio de Janeiro as a result of an exchange of prisoners during the War of 1812. The documents include correspondence; legal and financial documents; maps documenting Maria Susanna Ten Eyck's real estate holdings; appointments and orders relating to John Pine Decatur's naval career at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and elsewhere, and a notice of his election to the United States Military Philosophical Society; and a passport and a Russian visa for John Pine Decatur, Jr., as well as his diploma from the U.S. Naval Lyceum. Correspondence includes several letters to and from John Pine Decatur, Jr., relating to challenges to duels, and a letter from his brother, Stephen Decatur, to Anna R. Philbrick, describing plans for their wedding in Boston.
